Hello my Amestoy Family & Friends!
I hope you all are well as we move into 2016. This folder is my 3rd, and Final Edit of my “Amestoy Family and Encino Ranch History” project.
Many of you received my 2nd edit, as I thought it was complete. Then, I received some additional Amestoy descendant corrections which I felt needed to be added. These corrected pages are listed below.
Please replace the previous pages with the ones I have enclosed.
They are:
1. “Title of Folders” – This page is an outline of the CD-Folders, on the NEW CD I have enclosed. Revised.
2. The Amestoy Family and Encino Ranch History CD is edited.
This Revised CD contains the pages of the Amestoy Album which I made from my father’s collection of Amestoy family information, and research I found on Ancestry.com. I scanned these pages, and copied to the CD which you now have.
I have removed repetitive files, and they are in ‘pdf’ or ‘jpeg’ files. That means, most computers SHOULD be able to open and you can read what is on the folder. The files are small, and will take you one-hour or less to view.
The “Amestoy PHOTOS” folder is from the Los Encinos State Park Docents website.
3. A Descendants of Domingo Amestoy & Marie Elizabeth Aycaguer-Revised
4. Children of Domingo & Marie Aycaguer Amestoy-Revised
5. Amestoy Children of Domingo – All- Revised
6. Michel Francois Amestoy_Parents_Siblings-Revised
7. Amestoy Family Tree – Page 4-Revised
For those Amestoy descendants who are receiving this folder for the first time, please allow me to share how I came to creating this family history project.
Over the past 3 ˝ years, I have researched, collected and created a photo album of papers, articles, and photographs of my Amestoy family. My father left me many photos and papers from his mother, Grace E. Amestoy Tipton. Her parents are Jean Baptiste “JB” Amestoy and Francoise Hauret Amestoy. JB is one of 8 children of Domingo and Marie Amestoy. Domingo’s children were involved in the Encino Ranch (aka Amestoy Ranch) operations, or family businesses, in one way or another.
This is how I came to create this project, knowing the importance of these documents, and that my father would wish for them to be placed in an album. I began to create my family Amestoy ancestry tree on Ancestry.com.
The documents lead to searching the Internet for the businesses of Domingo, his history, and the recorded history of the Encino Ranch. The historical articles I found on the Internet include history about the Amestoy family, their ranch operations which involved raising sheep, dry-land wheat farming, and vineyards for wine.
Also included in these folders are photos of Domingo Amestoy’s businesses including the Amestoy Building in Los Angeles (1887); his Castruccio-Amestoy grocery & delivery stock certificates & short article of this fine delicatessen delivery service in 1905; The Encino Oil Company stock certificates of 1900; and a 1954 interview of Francoise Hauret Amestoy (wife of Jean Baptiste “JB”) of ‘Life on the Encino Ranch’.
Most of the photos came from the Los Encino State Park Docents website (http://historicparks.org/data/encinos-archives). Some photos I added from Grace E. Amestoy’s photo collection; my maternal grand-mother.
There are articles about the Encino Ranch, history of the San Fernando Valley from the early settlers including the Tongva Indians and the Spanish Portola Expedition. Many French Basque families were early settlers of Southern California. Domingo Amestoy is one of them.
A wonderful book on the history of Encino is: Images of America, Encino. By Michael Crosby. Michael was the President of the Los Encinos Docents Association for many years. You can buy this book at: www.arcadiapublishing.com, 843-853-2070; email-sales@arcadiapublishing.com ISBN 978-0-7385-6991-8.
You can see my “Tipton Family Tree” at www.ancestry.com, under “Trees”. It is open to public viewing, if you have an Ancestry.com account. This has Amestoy descendants for 3 generations, and some 4th generation.
Lastly, I wish to acknowledge my Amestoy elders who gave me tremendous support during my research. Thank you to Joe Amestoy, Dick Mahoney and Gerry Wells-Amestoy. These three men are all 3rd generation descendants as great-grandchildren to Domingo and Marie Amestoy. Joe, Dick & Gerry told some funny stories, and trying to remember the family ancestry, names, and spellings too. Gerry wished me “Good Luck”, and after 3 ˝ years, I can see why. Also, I thank Janice Klafehn, who is a great-grand-daughter of Louis & Engrace Hauret. Janice helped with her extensive research, as found on Ancestry.com and www.findagrave.com. The Los Encinos State Park Docents website was used for many reproduction of historical photos.
This Amestoy history research has been very fulfilling to me. My brother, Gregg, and I were told many stories by my father, Ken A. Tipton, about the Amestoy French Basque family. He was proud of his heritage, and loved to share stories. Please share this rich heritage with your grand-children. If you can go visit Los Encinos State Park, you will feel the joy in knowing this old ranch has been preserved for all generations to come, and learn a part of the California history. We are lucky to be a part of this big family.
Wishing you all the best in Life!
With love and happiness to you, my Amestoy family,
Jill Alison Tipton
